Until 20 August, Riga Municipality invites residents’ associations that wish to clean up a municipally owned plot of land and create a more attractive environment in their neighbourhood to apply for municipal support. The available support includes waste collection containers, topsoil and compost for establishing lawns and flower beds, as well as grass seed.

Any residents’ association registered in Riga, including apartment owners’ associations, is eligible to apply. Residents must select a municipally owned area in their neighbourhood where they would like either to collect waste or to create, for example, a new flower bed or lawn. Land ownership can be checked on the municipality’s geospatial data website, georiga.eu.

Applications received will be reviewed and coordinated with the manager of the relevant land plot. If demand exceeds the available amount of support, applications will be reviewed and approved in the order in which they were submitted, while also ensuring that as many neighbourhoods as possible receive support. It is planned that the requested and approved support will be available in the second half of September this year.

To apply for support and specify the type of assistance required, applicants must complete the application form.

We use the city in different ways every day – we walk, cycle, push children in prams, travel by public transport, or drive. It is therefore important that the urban environment is safe and convenient for everyone.

Unfortunately, this is not always the case. In some places, vehicles occupy pavements or pedestrian areas, making it difficult to move around and creating dangerous situations. Together with Riga residents, we would like to identify such locations.

We invite you to mark on the map the places where you believe urban infrastructure elements should be installed, such as bollards, traffic-restricting posts, or bicycle racks. This will help improve pedestrian safety, reduce unauthorised vehicle access and parking, and make the urban environment more convenient for everyone.

We therefore invite you to participate and indicate locations where the following should be installed:

• bollards;
• traffic-restricting posts;
• bicycle racks.

Riga residents encounter traffic-restricting posts frequently in their daily lives. They are widely used to manage traffic, separate different areas, and improve pedestrian safety. However, we would like to provide some additional information about bollards.

What are bollards?

Bollards are durable metal posts that prevent vehicles from entering pedestrian areas or driving onto pavements. They help keep pedestrian routes clear and safe while protecting pavements, squares, and other urban infrastructure from damage. Currently, most bollards are installed in Riga’s historic centre, but there are also other areas of the city where they could be useful.

Go to the survey and mark the street section or location on the map where you believe one of these urban infrastructure elements should be installed. Your input will help identify the locations where installing bollards or traffic-restricting posts, or creating safety zones, would most effectively improve road safety and the quality of the urban environment.

To improve pedestrian mobility and ensure a safe and convenient environment for all residents, the Riga Municipality’s Department of Outdoor Space and Mobility continues to lower pavement kerbs on municipally owned land.

This year, the municipality has already conducted a public survey and continues to welcome residents’ proposals and suggestions.

In 2025, pedestrian pavement kerbs were lowered at more than 70 locations across Riga, covering a total length of over 1,520 metres. During the first six months of this year, kerbs were lowered along more than 1,000 metres

Kerb lowering is carried out:

• at intersections to improve accessibility;
• to provide a convenient solution not only for people with reduced mobility, but also for parents with prams and other residents in their daily activities;
• using a standard design in which the lowered section of the pavement is at least 2 metres wide.

Residents’ reports concerning kerbs will be compiled and assessed according to a standard procedure:

• the location will be inspected;
• the submitted addresses will be grouped by neighbourhood;
• the technical feasibility of carrying out the work will be assessed;
• the location will be added to the work plan in the order in which it was received, with works grouped within the same neighbourhood.
