Riga’s residents associations are eligible for support in maintaining municipal areas

Until 20 August, Riga Municipality invites residents’ associations that wish to clean up a municipally owned plot of land and create a more attractive environment in their neighbourhood to apply for municipal support. The available support includes waste collection containers, topsoil and compost for establishing lawns and flower beds, as well as grass seed.

Any residents’ association registered in Riga, including apartment owners’ associations, is eligible to apply. Residents must select a municipally owned area in their neighbourhood where they would like either to collect waste or to create, for example, a new flower bed or lawn. Land ownership can be checked on the municipality’s geospatial data website, georiga.eu.

Applications received will be reviewed and coordinated with the manager of the relevant land plot. If demand exceeds the available amount of support, applications will be reviewed and approved in the order in which they were submitted, while also ensuring that as many neighbourhoods as possible receive support. It is planned that the requested and approved support will be available in the second half of September this year.

To apply for support and specify the type of assistance required, applicants must complete the application form.

For any questions, please contact your neighbourhood coordinator. Contact details are available at: https://apkaimes.lv/aic/apkaimju-koordinatori/

Results

This autumn, 13 initiatives by Riga residents’ associations received support to improve municipal land plots through volunteer efforts, helping to create a more attractive environment in their neighbourhoods. The residents’ associations received practical support in the form of topsoil, grass seeds, compost and waste containers.

In total, 67 cubic metres of topsoil and 20 cubic metres of compost were delivered to the residents’ associations, along with 57 kg of grass seeds. Waste containers were also provided at three locations to facilitate the collection of litter and other waste from the areas.

The support was organised and provided by the Riga Neighbourhood Residents’ Centre in cooperation with SIA “Rīgas meži” (Riga Forests). The removal of waste collected by the residents’ associations was organised with the involvement of the Maintenance Division of the Riga Municipality’s Department of Public Space and Mobility.

The residents’ associations have carried out various neighbourhood improvement activities, including restoring lawns and planting beds, creating flower beds, and collecting waste.
